Sidmouth Lifeboat was called out after reports that two kayakers had become separated from their boats.
The emergency service was called out to the water near Jacob’s Ladder on Sunday at about 4pm.
The team, which was joined by the Beer Coastguard, quickly discovered that the spotted ‘kayaks’ were in fact two large pieces of driftwood.
The lifeboat then undertook a thorough search of the area to ensure that no one was in the water.
When nothing was found the teams were stood down by Solent Coastguard.
