IN aid of the Gresford Colliery Distress Fund a very enjoyable concert was given in the Manor Hall on Monday evening, to a large and most appreciative audience. It was a very happy inspiration on the part of Mrs Butteris, J.P., to arrange this concert for such a purpose, and she was also correspondingly fortunate in enlisting the services of the band of artistes who provided such an entirely attractive programme.

SIDBURY Village Hall was crowded on Thursday evening, when on behalf of Sidbury National Schools Repair Fund, a most enjoyable entertainment was given to a thoroughly appreciative audience. It was arrange by Mrs Prendergast, and she is to be heartily congratulated on a refreshingly bright and diversified programme.

WHEN Mr George Hamlin, chairman of the council, presented the General Purposes Committee report at the October meeting, he said the fact that the minutes for that meeting occupied 39 pages of foolscap paper illustrated the amount of work put in by the officers. Speaking about the Roxburgh site, he said that when the council acquired the property they decided it was a suitable place on which to provide accommodation for people who had to be rehoused under 'slum clearance' schemes.

SIDMOUTH and District Royal Naval Old Comrades Association held their usual celebration at the Anchor Hotel on Wednesday evening. The local branch is now 48 years old and as vigorous as ever, with an increasing membership.

ONE of them men closest to the Brighton bomb outrage, Mr Paul Boswell, manager of the Grand Hotel, has kept a home in Newton Poppleford for 20 years and will soon be retiring to the village. Speaking from the hotel on Wednesday, 59-year-old Mr Boswell relived the horror of the IRA attack when he told the Herald: "I was asleep in my flat on the second floor of the Grand when I heard this tremendously loud sound like a jet rushing by, then this very big explosion."

POSTMAN Michael Wood faced terror when the brakes on his delivery van failed as he came down Sidbury Hill on Wednesday. Knowing that the out-of-control vehicle could cause an accident if he took it over the narrow Cotford Bridge and into the village, Mr Wood tried to swerve up a lane to the left.
