ROTARY Club of Sidmouth celebrated a landmark moment when it appointed its first-ever female president.

A proud Lynn Ellis took up the role at a special lunch last Wednesday and said she was looking forward to the challenge.

Mrs Ellis added that receiving the chain from predecessor Barry Chapman was a ‘great honour’.

She was inspired to join rotary by her father’s long association with the organisation – and hopes to inspire more people to join.

The handover last week marked the end of the Rotary year.

Mr Chapman reflected on a busy 12 months at the helm that saw 75th anniversary celebrations and the compilation of a special booklet.

Fundraising and community events took place and nearly £8,000 from the annual Swimathon was handed to the 1st Sid Vale Scouts – the subject of a Herald campaign this year.

Past district governor Bill Titley thanked Mr Chapman, on behalf of all members, for his hard work.

President Mrs Ellis was welcomed into her new role and wished well for the year ahead.
