Unemployed Gareth Legge, 30, was in Sidmouth on January 14 when he assaulted his sister and brother.

A man who headbutted his sister in a drunken attack has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Unemployed Gareth Legge, 30, was in Sidmouth on January 14 when he assaulted his sister and brother.

Legge, formerly of Lymebourne Park, Sidmouth, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault by beating when he appeared at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (February 13).

Sonia Croft, prosecuting, said Legge’s sister suffered a black eye, bruising and a cut to the bridge of her nose as a result of the incident.

In a victim impact statement, Legge’s sister said she was left feeling ‘embarrassed’ following the incident.

Mitigating, James Rickard said Legge, now of Hawthorn Park Road, Wembury, had shown ‘genuine remorse’ and made regular and repeated admissions of his actions on the day.

A probation report read to the court stated Legge headbutted his sister because she was ‘in his face’.

A district judge handed Legge a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for a year, a 20-day rehabilitation requirement, and 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay a fine totalling £200.
