Emergency crews were called out after the torso of a man was discovered off the coast near Sidmouth yesterday afternoon (Sunday).

Police and coastguard crews were dispatched to Salcombe Mouth, followed by Sidmouth Lifeboat at around 4pm.

A police spokesman said: “The torso of a deceased man was discovered off the coast of Sidmouth late afternoon on Sunday (15th October).

“From the condition of the body, it is clear that this had been in the water for a considerable amount of time.

“Local coastguard aided with the collection of the body.

“Forensic post-mortem and formal ID has yet to have taken place, put police are not currently treating this death as suspicious.”

A Sidmouth Lifeboat spokesman said: “Great multi-agency teamwork led to the lifeboat and police returning to Sidmouth Lifeboat station.

“Thanks to all crew, police and coastguard.”
