East Devon District Council (EDDC) says around 500 hundred properties in the region are left empty- and have been for more than six months.

‘MATCHMAKING’ housing chiefs want Sidmouth and Ottery residents’ help in filling hundreds of ‘eyesore’ empty homes.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) says around 500 hundred properties in the region are left empty- and have been for more than six months.

The authority has teamed up with Exeter City Council’s Empty Homes Service to develop a ‘matchmaking’ scheme which aims to locate such properties and then contact their owners to put them in touch with others interested in buying and renovating the dwellings.

EDDC cabinet member for sustainable homes and communities, Councillor Jill Elson, said: “A dilapidated and run-down building is an eyesore and it’s in everyone’s interest to restore it. This matchmaking service, which means the council can introduce a potential purchaser to a seller, is a very positive initiative.

“We not only hope to hear from anyone who lives near to, or knows of, these empty homes, but we also want to hear from anyone who is interested in buying one to live in, sell on or rent.”

A council spokesperson added: “We are committed to bringing empty homes back into use by offering advice and assistance, pointing out the options available and helping owners rent the property if they are unwilling to sell it. Enforcement will only be used when absolutely necessary.”
