OTTERY mayor Glyn Dobson has thanked everyone who made the Christmas lights appeal a success.

It was launched in September, spearheaded by Tourist Information Centre manager Phyllis Baxter, following fears the Chamber of Commerce wouldn’t spend anything on the display this year.

More than 3,000 was collected from businesses, including Country Farm Butchers in Broad Street, and Sainsbury’s, which is planning a store in Hind Street. The council contributed 3,500 and the chamber 1,300 on top of this.

Mr Dobson said: “We would like to thank everyone who donated money, the town looks great. The response from local traders has been marvellous. It goes to show the commitment to making it a place to visit and shop in.

“The Christmas spirit is truly alive in Ottery St Mary and I would encourage everyone to come and enjoy the shops, support your local traders and enjoy the atmosphere created by the festive season. On behalf of all the councillors, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.”
