A FAMILY run East Hill business has bagged prestigious award for its environmentally friendly approach.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme has acknowledged Mazzard Farm Holiday Cottages' hard work in minimizing its environmental impact, and awarded it with a gold level recognition, the highest available.

The cottages, which opened in July this year, use locally produced wood pellets, sheep wool insulation, organic paints and locally sourced and built furniture.

In addition, guests are encouraged to 'reduce, re-use and recycle', and shop locally. Guests who leave their cars at home also qualify for a discount.

Owner Ruud Jansen said: "A hugely rewarding aspect of our business is that we have proven that we can be totally committed to the environment."

Andrea Nicholas, Manager of the GTBS said of the farm: "The efforts made during the refurbishment of the property to take account of the environment are to be highly commended and will help the business be more sustainable in these times of cutbacks.
