A fast food giant could be setting up a drive-thru as part of plans to build a roadside service and petrol area near Ottery.

An application to bring McDonalds to the site, which is two miles west of the town, has been submitted by Rapleys LLP on behalf of MRH (GB) Ltd - one of the UK’s largest independent petrol station owner and operators.

The site at Straightway Head Junction, Whimple, would be developed into a petrol station comprising of a sales building, canopy, car and caravan parking, fuel pumps for cars and lorries, two underground storage tanks and ancillary arrangements.

The proposed McDonalds restaurant would include seating for customers and 47 car parking spaces.

The applicant has also proposed HGV and coach parking, access arrangement, landscaping and drainage.

“The nearest motorway services to the site are at junction 30 of the M5 eight miles away. There is also a petrol filling station at Honiton which is accessible from the A30, however it does not provide the same range of facilities.”

The council’s online planning history for the site dates back to November 1994 when permission was granted to build a roadside service area.

A number of applications were submitted to renew the permission with the last dating back to 2011.
