FURTHER plans have been submitted to increase the number of flats to be built on the site of Glenside Nursing Home, Manor Road, Sidmouth, once it is demolished.

Last year permission was given for 12 flats to be built at the site.

Now Glenside Development Company has asked East Devon District Council for permission to build 14 apartments in two blocks, one four storeys high, the other three.

Both southerly facades will be predominantly of glass and balconies to take advantage of both the open views and solar gain, says Burke Rickhards for its client.

In its statement supporting the application, the architects say of their appearance: "The concept for the design is that of floating roof planes over a solid base." The top floor apartments are designed to 'float' and are clad in zinc.

"The intention is to create two simple contemporary villa type buildings with an appearance that is aesthetically pleasing for people to live in and make a positive contribution to its surroundings."

A modern full height stained glass panel is incorporated at the entrance.

In its statement conclusions, the firm says the building design has been chosen "to compliment the neighbouring buildings. Overall it will represent an enhancement to the appearance of the site."

The proposed apartments are designed to use significantly lower energy than the existing residential home, it adds.

Neighbours have until January 7 to make representations to EDDC.

Natural England has already said it has no objections to the application as it considers the proposal "will not have a significant effect on any protected species."

A bat and owl survey has also been carried out.
