Cycle speedway will be coming to Ottery in October as part of a day to bring bikes and crowds to the town.

Members of the town council have been working with representatives from cycling clubs across Devon and British Cycling to host a hill climb up Chineway following the success of the Tour of Britain.

The hill was designated as a King of the Mountain stage during the race last September.

As part of the day on Occtober 15, a working party is organising a series of events in the Land of Canaan for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Among the activities will be displays from Exeter Cycle Speedway Club, Velo Vintage and street dancing group Urbanflow.

John Campion, who is organising events in the Land of Canaan, said it is going to be a ‘big pull’ for visitors who will be able to try out the sport.

He added: “They will bring the bikes and anyone aged six to 60 plus can have a go. I think it will be a big pull.”

A race course will also be set up in the Land of Canaan with stalls for refreshments and Ottery organisations. In the evening, the working party is looking to run an open air film event.

John added: “The idea is that Ottery organisations can showcase what they do and try to get people to join or to volunteer.”

The events will begin after the conclusion of the King and Queen of the Mountain climb, which is being organised by 1st Chard Wheelers.

Councillor Josefina Gori, who is co-ordinating the climb, said: “The response has been incredible. We have cycling clubs from all over the place - even from London.

“One of the most import things is the involvement of young people and to get them interested in the sport.

“I feel quite optimistic about it. I hope to talk to the shops as I would like to have the shop windows decorated with bikes.”

Organisations and charities that would like to book a space on the day can contact John on 01404 814547.
