More support for CCTV plans in Ottery car park

An Ottery hotelier is backing plans to install CCTV around the Land of Canaan car park after vandals struck once again at the weekend.
Lynn Thurgate, of the Tumbling Weir Hotel said fences had been damaged, debris left in the road blocking the entrance to the Canaan Way business, a light was smashed, and items had been thrown into the mill stream on Saturday night.
The couple, who have run the business for 16 years, said the problem was ongoing and the latest damage would set them back several hundred pounds.
Mrs Thurgate said: “What have they got against us? We are targeted all the time. Unless we have evidence no-one will do anything. They need to be caught on camera. I do think it [CCTV] will make a difference.
“We have had ongoing problems over the years, it is particularly bad at the moment, we have had eggs thrown at the hotel, stuff nicked, deliveries nicked.”
Residents spoke out about their concerns back in August after vandals smashed wing mirrors and dented cars in the car park.
The town council discussed the issue at a meeting on Monday. Councillor Roger Giles said there had been a series of incidents in October and November and he had contacted the district council about installing cameras at the car park.
He said: “Ottery St Mary Town Council expresses its concerns at the continuing problem and vandalism and antisocial behaviour in and around the Land of Canaan. The council asks the police to take the measures to monitor and deal with the problem.
“The council also asks EDDC and the police to install CCTV at the Land of Canaan and the council indicates its willingness to make a financial contribution towards the cost of installation.”
He added his hopes the cameras would add a deterrent effect but were there if an incident took place.
The council voted to support Cllr Giles’ proposal.
