A councillor’s motion calling on East Devon District Council to set an example by reducing its single-use plastic by 2020 will be debated next week.

Councillor Cathy Gardner is asking colleagues to commit over the next two years to bring EDDC’s plastic waste to zero, as well as individually making alternative choices to reduce their own plastic usage.

Her motion states that the council will resolve to ‘lead by example’ to reduce the use of single-use plastic with a goal of zero single-use plastics in two years’ time. She said washable options would be favoured instead of plastic spoons and cups and compostable items purchased if there were any unavoidable disposable goods.

Cllr Gardner said: “We should be doing something about it and leading by example. We have to start somewhere and we need to push it.”

The motion has been supported by 13 councillors ahead of the next full council meeting on Wednesday.
