A SIDMOUTH woman braved treacherous terrain and the elements on Monday to climb a Welsh mountain for charity.

Nina Peters, of Sid Valley Cars, climbed the North Ridge of the 3000ft Tryfan Mountain in the Snowdonian range with her son, Dan, 26, for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Nina decided to raise money for the charity after two of her friends died from the disease in recent years.

Nina said: "We achieved it but it was very hard. It was much harder than what I thought it would be. It's the last time I go up that particular mountain.

"The forecast was for rain and wind but fortunately the rain kept off until the descent.

"It was very gusty and we were very exposed as we were on the North Ridge. It wasn't windy enough to be dangerous but we had to take extreme care."

In total, it took the pair seven and a half hours to walk up the mountain and back down again.

Nina trained for several months before the hike but her training was hampered in the three weeks before.

She added: "I was really busy with the taxi so didn't have much time to train which didn't help.

"When I got to the top I was absolutely exhausted and I'm aching all over now.

Dan found it relatively easy but he's only 26 and I think at that age I would have found it easy too!"

The Herald previously reported Nina's plans to climb the mountain and she was overwhelmed by the kindness of the community.

She said: "There was a brilliant response from people in the town wishing me well and a lot of people donated money."

Nina has so far raised £600 and Dan has collected £200 but the pair hope to raise in the region of £1,500.

Anyone who would like to donate money can contact Nina at Sid Valley Cars on (01395) 577633 or can visit www.justgiving.com/ninapeters.
