SIDMOUTH Music Club is looking forward to its 46th season starting on Thursday, October 7.

The club meets on the first Thursday of the month at Sidmouth Methodist Church Hall from October to April, excluding January. It is a non-profit organisation, all the musicians give their time voluntarily.

This season’s line-up includes local classical singers and musicians and others from as far afield as the Channel Islands. Thursday’s recital features sopranos Val Howells and Linda Shepherd, and pianist and composer Peter Wyatt, with cakes to mark the significant anniversary.

Classics in Latin, French, English, German are performed alongside contemporary works by composers including Karl Jenkins. Other genres of music will also feature, and poetry. The Christmas session includes festive songs and sea shanties.

The club started as a small ladies’ choir and orchestra, which now has 25 members and will play at three of the recitals.

Club secretary Frances Spence said: “Many people in Sidmouth, especially newcomers, don’t know we exist, so it would be good to raise the profile this season.”

The club, which currently has 50 to 60 members, is open to all. While membership is encouraged it is not obligatory, costing £10 for the season.

“We keep membership fees low because we enjoy music and want to encourage others to come along and enjoy it too,” said Frances, who praised treasurer Andrew Downie and programme organisers Joan Ridley and Valerie French.

Trumps, in Fore Street, is offering club programme holders a complimentary cup of coffee or tea, redeemable after the first recital or at any other time.

Proprietors Jackie and Mark Feeney said: “We are delighted to celebrate such a noteworthy achievement of 46 seasons.”

Recitals begin at 10.30am, admission is £2.50. For more information call 07528 234835.
