KIND-HEARTED Ottery youngsters left a concert audience "dumbstruck" by their talent and raised 500 to boost the parish's elderly, ill, bereaved and vulnerable.

More than 150 people packed Ottery Parish Church on Saturday for a Youth Concert, organised by young people in aid of the Ottery and District Help Scheme- subject of the Ottery Herald's CAMPAIGN 2010.

Thirty musicians aged from just six to 19 years of age performed at the venue for the event, organised by a 17-year-old organ prodigy.

King's School student Ben Scott gathered individual talents ranging from violin to vocal performers, as well as appearances from Ottery Silver Band's 'Junior Brass', the Junior Parish Church Choir, and Japanese drum show-stoppers the Otter Taiko Troupe.

"It came together so well, I've never seen anything like that before," said renowned organist Ben. "It was so easy to organise, the young people were just great. They all played to such a high standard it was absolutely spectacular."

One of the organ ace teenager's pupils Miles Corkhill, just ten, performed on the instrument only a month after he took it up.

"I thoroughly enjoyed myself- people are still talking about it and are asking when's the next one?," said Ben.

Hundreds of pounds raised will help secure the future of the under threat Ottery and District Help Scheme.

"My grandparents are both in their 80's and find it really hard to get around and do things. The Scheme gives them that chance, providing transport," said Ben.

Michael Moore helped organise and told the Herald: "All the youngsters performed brilliantly. Everyone who attended was dumbstruck by the talent.

"We're still counting the proceeds but hope to have raised around 500.

"Everyone hears in the press bad things about young people, not the good side. The other night was definitely an example of that good side.
