EVERY last trace of the Napoli may have left our shores but Mollie the Labrador has some souvenirs that are sure to act as a lasting memory of the ill-fated ship.

The five-year-old pooch, which belongs to David Hedges, a Weston resident, has a small collection of soft toys she found on Branscombe beach the day after the 62,000 container ship was grounded off its coast.

Mollie's favourite toy, which she rescued along with four others, is a brown and white dog, appropriately named Shipwreck.

David said: "We were walking along the beach and she kept picking up bits of toys which were lying in the flotsam. She loves soft toys and she picked five up- some even had oil on them. I couldn't believe the amount of junk-there was hundreds of BMW wing mirrors."

David gave two of the soft toys away to a couple of children as souvenirs but let Mollie keep the other three: Shipwreck, a Winnie the Pooh Santa Claus and an oil-stained Bugs Bunny lifeguard.

He added: "I tried white spirit and got as much oil off the lifeguard as I could but despite my best efforts I couldn't get all of it off."

Mollie, a rescue dog, was adopted by David when she was eight-months-old.

He says the toys help to comfort her mental scars, caused by months of neglect.

"She used to be left by herself a lot and the toys partly relieve her stress," he said.

"If we have guests, Mollie will come to the gate and then rush indoors and get one of her soft toys. She never lets anyone take it though-its stays on her at all times!
