More than £100,000 has been allocated to improve cliff safety in Sidmouth and Beer to ensure public safety.
There are signs of structural weakness in the parapet wall next to the Clocktower Café in Connaught Gardens and the masonry and sandstone beneath have also become severely eroded, leaving it at risk of collapse.
Landowner East Devon District Council (EDDC) is proposing £65,000 works including installing a concrete beam at the base of the wall to allow effective maintenance of the cliff’.
The authority also plans to install additional rock netting and additional rock anchors and to carry out general maintenance.
In Beer, the fence below Annis’ Knob has been deemed too small to catch falling material so it will be increased in height.
An EDDC spokeswoman said: “We already have an exclusion zone at the base of the cliff below Annis’ Knob, but this work is to ensure all reasonable steps are being taken to protect public safety.”
The project has been costed at £44,700 and proposed as a bid in EDDC’s 2018/19 capital programme.
Cabinet members noted the recommendations when they met last week.
