Ottery has a new community ambulance but the fund-raising is far from over say the hospital’s League of Friends.
The group, subject of the Herald’s CAMPAIGN 2012, has borrowed the cash from itself to pay for a new vehicle after it could no longer use the previous one for fear of it breaking down with passengers on board.
Ottery St Mary Hospital League of Friends is still desperate to raise money for the project as without the funds paid back they will not be able to perform the rest of its vital community work with patients and at the hospital.
The league bought a community ambulance 11 years ago and it has been hugely popular, covering in excess of 65,000 miles.
It is used three days a week to take elderly people from their homes to Ottery hospital, giving respite for their carers, and takes a group of ladies to Honiton swimming baths every week, but was becoming unreliable.
It needed to be replaced, and although they had saved �24,000, they still needed to find another �21,000.
They hope the new ambulance can be used by even more people, but David Roberts, who is the ambulance co-coordinator, is looking for ways of raising money for the project, and anyone with ideas or wants to get involved should contact him on 01404 813961.
