A NEW path for cyclists and pedestrians is to be created in Beer in a bid to improve road safety.

The route which combines a cycle path, footpath and bridleway is to be constructed from the top of Old Beer Hill to the top of Long Hill.

Beer Parish Council has been concerned about motorists speeding in this area for many years and several members of the public have complained about the dangers of pedestrians using the roads.

In the past year the parish council has looked at ideas to improve road safety and the creation of the footpath and cycleway was high on its list of priorities.

Funding for the path has recently been secured from Devon County Council and it is hoped work will be complete in the next financial year.

When built the path will also form a continuation of the 'Stop Line' cycle path from the Bristol Channel to Seaton, which is due to be completed by 2012.

District councillor Mike Green said: "Beer Parish Council have been working on ways to improve road safety in this area and are hoping that this will be a great improvement and are very pleased to have now got the funding from Devon County Council."

Martin Richards, chairman of Beer Parish Council, said: "It is something we have been wanting for a long time. It is going to help no end as it will be a lot safer for people walking any cycling in this area."

Another method to combat speeding in the area is the creation of a nib-the narrowing of the entrance- at the top of Long Hill.

A Devon County Council spokesman said the council has been working with the parish council and landowners to carry out a feasibility study of a off-road section as well as additional traffic calming.

He added: "If all parties are in agreement this would improve road safety for walkers, cyclist and horse riders, and will make it easier for locals and visitors to travel between Beer and Seaton without having to use a car.
