EAST Devon’s first new town since the middle ages will be an “eco trail-blazer”- planning chiefs have promised.

Detailed plans for the primary phase of Cranbrook have been revealed for the first time.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) said plans for the first 1,120 homes on an approved site off Honiton Road, Rockbeare, have been validated and are available to view on its website.

The new community already has outline planning permission.

A 21-day consultation on plans started this week.

The fate of the latest plans will be determined at a special meeting of EDDC’s development management committee on March 8.

EDDC says the “vision” for Cranbrook is to create “a self-sufficient, low carbon new community.”

Council leader Sara Randall Johnson said: “A top priority is to ensure that the new community is sustainable, both in terms of reducing resource use and minimising carbon emissions.

Plans reveal a single ‘energy centre’ will serve both Cranbrook and the nearby Exeter Skypark and could utilise a biomass fuel.
