STAFF and pupils from Ottery Primary School gathered at a special flag raising ceremony recently to say goodbye to one of the school's teaching stalwarts.

STAFF and pupils from Ottery Primary School gathered at a special flag raising ceremony recently to say goodbye to one of the school's teaching stalwarts.Ian Thomas, who has retired as deputy head teacher at Ottery Primary School after 26 years in the post, raised the new Devon flag aloft to mark his last day in the job.Mr Thomas spent the majority of his career teaching key stage two and in later years taught key stage four at the school.He also took over the running of the school as acting head teacher prior to current head teacher, Doug Rylance, taking over.Mr Rylance said: "He was an excellent teacher and, during his years at the school, he always had time for the children."He was professional and dedicated and everyone here will miss him."He said it would be a difficult task to replace him.Mr Rylance said: "I believe he had mixed feeling about leaving but he was looking forward to his retirement and moving to France where he has a property."The school is currently short-listing candidates for the empty deputy head teacher post.
