Offenders who would normally receive an �80 on the spot fine will be given the chance to save �40 by attending an awareness course.
Devon and Cornwall Police has hailed its Antisocial Behaviour Diversion Scheme as a “brand new and unique” way of dealing with the problem that is designed to deal specifically with offenders in the region.
The initiative was launched and will run alongside two other diversion schemes, related to cannabis possession and alcohol related disorder.
A force spokesperson said the schemes are aimed at people handed an �80 Penalty Notice for Disorder (PND) for minor offences.
They will be given the opportunity to attend an awareness course costing �40 rather than pay the full fine.
Offenders can be nominated to attend a course by antisocial behaviour co-ordinators, probation officers, police officers and youth offending teams.
The courses are aimed at encouraging offenders to review their behaviour and to change their attitude and behaviour.
