TRUSTEES of Kennaway House have elected a leading Sidmouth solicitor as their vice-chairman, as the charity’s long-serving leader looks to step down.
Chairman Dr Michael James has revealed he is looking to relinquish the role after nearly a decade that has seen the prestigious venue saved from the brink of demolition and undergo a 1million restoration.
New vice-chairman Richard Hedger, managing partner of Michelmores Solicitors, said he was delighted to have the opportunity of contributing to the future success of Kennaway House.
Chairman Dr James said: “I’ve been involved in the project for almost ten years now. The house was a ruin facing possible demolition, so I’m delighted that we’ve been able to complete the 1 million restoration and to see the house so popular and so well used.
“But ten years is a longish time and I’m seventy now, so I’ve told my fellow trustees that I’m looking to give up the chair soon.
“I’m grateful to Richard for sharing some of my duties like welcoming people to our events at the house and representing the Trust locally and more widely.”

Mr Hedger said: “After its amazing restoration, Kennaway House has become a major social, cultural and economic asset to Sidmouth and the villages around it.
“It needs to go on raising funds to maintain its non-profit work as an impressive gallery for art and other exhibitions and an arts centre presenting events like this year’s successful Readers and Writers Season.”
