Newton Poppleford’s bonfire and fireworks night was said to be its best yet.

Around 500 adults and 200 children attended the event which sought to bring together the whole parish for an evening of fun and celebration.

“The weather certainly helped,” said Councillor Chris Burhop, of the organising committee. “It must have been eight or 10 degrees warmer than the previous evening, but most of the tickets were sold in advance so people were going to support the event anyway.”

The primary school ran a competition for the best face for the guy, with the winner, 10-year-old Issy Nelson, having the opportunity to start the fireworks by pressing a remote control button.

Mr Burhop thanked everyone who worked hard to make the event a success, especially the school’s PTA, The Cannon Inn, Parsons Transport White Rabbit Disco and the parish council.

He added:“We are already looking forward to next year where we hope to have an even bigger display.”
