A field fire in Newton Poppleford spread across 10 acres and into hedges yesterday.
Two fire engines from Sidmouth were sent to Four Elms Hill at 4.15pm after reports of the blaze.
Crews arrived quickly requested further support with ten acres of field well alight. As officers got to work using four hose reel jets, a further fire engine arrived from Budleigh Salterton along with a water bowser from Torquay.
A crew from Dawlish, who were on standby at Middlemoor, Exeter, was also dispatched with an incident support unit and support vehicle from Exmouth.
By 6.46pm, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said officers were making ‘steady progress’, using three hose reel jets and beaters. At 7.45pm, the incident was scaled down to two fire crews.
