Her painting was shortlisted for a national award on the day after she heard it had been voted visitors’ favourite at an art exhibition in Sidmouth.
Sheila Tweed only took up painting 11 years ago when she retired to Newton Poppleford. She now chairs the village’s Art Society which held an exhibition at Kennaway House.
Visitors to the show picked her watercolour of teasel wildflowers as favourite and the next day she heard from a competition run by Ken Bromley Art Supplies that she was one of 75 picked from over a 1,000 entries for their Cover competition.
“I was absolutely flabbergasted, shocked and very pleased,” said Sheila.
She has a studio on the Venn Ottery Road in Newton Poppleford and is taking part in the Devon Open Studios event in September.
She said: “This is my first time and I am also doing three workshops so I’m nervous but hoping for lots of visitors.”
