Newton Poppleford residents raised a glass of champagne to celebrate Christmas Day at the village’s free festive lunch.

David and Rosemary Zirker organised and financed the event for 17 people at the pavilion on Monday, serving up a three course meal.

On offer was prawn cocktail, a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and the choice of Christmas pudding or Rosemary’s famous trifle.

The lunch was held for the first time last year and was attended by 14 people.

The couple hope next year’s event will include entertainment and be served from the Pavilion’s brand new kitchen.

David said: “Christmas Day can be very difficult if you are on your own, so this event which is growing, up from 14 last year, is very important

“A great time was had by all and the leftover food was given to people in the community. Each diner went home with a small Christmas Hamper containing home made goodies by Rosemary.”

The couple were helped by Chris and Wendy Lee and Barry Easter who provided champagne, crackers and transport on the day.
