LIFEGUARDS won't be returning to Sidmouth Beach say East Devon District Council.
In an incident last week, nine people were rescued from rough seas as hot weather drew residents and holidaymakers to the beach and into the water.
The Herald reported how Sidmouth Lifeboat and the Portland coastguard helicopter were dispatched last Thursday when easterly wind-whipped waters and a treacherous undertow caused swimmers to struggle around the western beach rock groynes.
Hair salon owner Simone Thomas rescued her twin sons and their friend from rough waters near Jacob's ladder. After the incident she said: "I think it would be a fabulous idea if we had lifeguards there for the six weeks holiday or when there is an easterly blowing."

However a spokesperson for EDDC said there are no plans to re-introduce the service to the area and added: "The incident on Sidmouth beach last week was a result of exceptional weather conditions and people not heeding the numerous warning signs.
