AN ALUMINIUM hanging sign, promoting a Sidmouth butchers shop as a Q Guild Quality Butchers, has been refused by district planners because it contravenes planning policies in a conservation area.

AN ALUMINIUM hanging sign, promoting a Sidmouth butchers' shop as a Q Guild Quality Butchers, has been refused by district planners because it contravenes planning policies in a conservation area.

Hayman's Butchers in Church Street wanted the sign, in green and gold lettering on a white background, to promote the scheme.

However, East Devon District Council refused the application after East Devon's conservation officer stated the sign with a plain bracket "does not enhance or preserve the conservation area" and the materials shown would detract from the local character of the street - dubbed Sidmouth's Bond Street - and were contrary to policy guidance.
