POLICE were called to Sidmouth on Monday after a resident thought she had seen notorious burglar Simon Berkowitz in the town.

Officers were sent to the Hillside area at around 10.30pm after the woman flagged down a passing patrol car.

A police spokesperson said they were concerned Berkowitz, who was convicted earlier this year of a string of burglaries, had been given early release or escaped from prison.

A search was carried out and the man was eliminated from enquiries.

Police reassured residents that Berkowitz is still behind bars.
