Newton Pop youngster’s Sports Relief bid - months after losing stabilisers

A SIX-YEAR-OLD schoolboy from Newton Poppleford will cycle 22 miles for charity – just months after ditching his stabilisers.

Bike-mad Oliver Smith wants to raise cash to buy toys for children less fortunate than him.

The kind-hearted youngster, of Exeter Road, is gearing up to ride from Exeter Quay to Dawlish Warren - and back - in aid of Sports Relief next Saturday, March 24.

Newton Poppleford Primary School pupil Oliver, who learned to ride a bike aged four, will have a special support team behind him – his mum and dad.

Gina, 46, and Robert, 47, have helped their son raise more than 100 so far. They hope to net 220.

Oliver said he wants to help the poor children around the world and “hopes they get better”.

He added that he “wants them to have some toys and toy boxes and to clean up the rubbish” from the areas they live in”.

“He just loves cycling and it was all completely his idea,” said Gina.

“His stabilisers came off not long ago- so it will be quite challenge.”

Robert added: “Oliver recently tackled the six-mile challenge route at Haldon Forest Park, and has completed it twice now on his single speed bike. The serious mountain bikers up there are always surprised to see him pedalling past with his one gear!”
