An £1000 cheque was presented to St John Ambulance by Sidmouth Arts Club Operatic Society on Wednesday.

The society collected £743 at their production of Gigi in October and committee members decided to bump up the amount to £1000.

The cheque was presented by Selwyn Kussman, chairman, John Baker, president and Brian Rees, treasurer, to Brian Johansen, divisional superintendent, Steve Parsons, cadet leader and David Hayward, county commander.

Mr Kussman said: "We are very happy to give to local charities and every time we have a production we do raise a lot of money for these charities.

"St John Ambulance does a very good job at our theatre productions and they are always there. It's a very worthwhile organisation to support."

Mr Johansen expressed his delight at receiving the cheque.

He said: "We are very grateful for the opportunity and it will help towards, if not completely pay for uniforms for the six new cadet members.

"We work very well with the society. It's nice that all parts of the community work together."

The next performance by the society will be Thoroughly Modern Millie in Easter Week at the Manor Pavilion.

Any local charities interested in taking part in the collection at the show can contact Selwyn Kussman for consideration on (01395) 515279.
