Widower’s plea for Sidmouth’s inpatient hospital beds to be spared

Please make sure that the Herald does everything in its power to ensure that we do not lose any beds within Sidmouth hospital.

My emotions are very exposed by this proposal. My wife died peacefully on July 4 in the hospital, holding hands with her children. We had been married for 48 years - I was allowed to spend our last night together in the next bed. Kerstin was happy to die there.

The RD&E is a stunning medical facility which we should all support. It is not an end-of-life hospital. It appears madness to encourage Devon to use it for this purpose. We are on the way to increasing the pressure on this hospital with the already announced bed closures.

Not everybody wants to die at home. My lady wanted the security of a hospital. She was in unbearable pain. With the help of Sidmouth Hospiscare and our laudable local GP, she was allowed to die in peace.
