A COFFEE morning in Ottery on Saturday welcomed special guests all the way from Melanesia.

The event at The Vicar's House, organised by the town's parish church, celebrated a visit from members of the Melanesian Brotherhood, an Anglican community based in the Solomon Island.

In February its headquarters on the island of Guadalcanal was devastated by floods.

All bridges on the island's one road were washed away, meaning all supplies can only get to the brotherhood by boat.

Ottery Parish Church, which has been fundraising for the cause, has a strong connection with the Brothers.

John Coleridge Patteson, who was born in Feniton Manor and was curate at Alfington church, became the first Bishop of Melanesia and was martyred on the island of Nukapu in1871.
