A driver who reversed at speed into a 64 year old pedestrian gave her first aid at the scene - and the whole incident was captured on a store’s CCTV.

Sports massage therapist Christopher Surridge was trying to take a short cut in the busy High Street - but hit the woman as she crossed the road.

She was knocked down and suffered a crack to the back of her head and bruising.

Surridge, 36, of Ottery St Mary, Devon, admitted careless driving and having no insurance in the incident in Sidmouth High Street in May.

The CCTV from the Tesco Metro store Surridge had popped into caught the incident and saw the pedestrian trying to run to avoid his reversing black Nissan car.

Prosecutor Lyndsey Baker said Surridge was reversing too quickly and there were a lot of pedestrians in the area and he failed to see the brightly dressed woman in his mirror.

Surridge said he is a first aider and held his victim’s hand and put his jacket under her head after the collision.

Exeter magistrates said it was a serious incident and banned him from driving for 12 months and fined him £715 and ordered him to pay his victim £100 compensation.
