Sustainable Ottery (SO) has secured a grant for 1,000 to install more efficient lighting at The Institute.

The group in had already successfully bid for a free energy audit of the building on Yonder Street by Energy Action Devon, and are pleased with Western Power’s decision to award them the cash.

The money comes from the ‘Community Chest Fund’ at the utilities company, but Jill Dixon from SO says there is still a long way to go to make The Institute energy efficient.

Dave West, chairman of trustee management board at the community venue, was pleased with the money won by SO. He said: “When we agreed that Jill could apply for the survey it was obvious that The Institute is a large, old and inefficient building by today’s standards, but we didn’t expect such an immediate and beneficial outcome. And now have much to consider.”

Jill added: “If we can introduce as many energy-saving ideas here as appropriate, then we hope that The Institute will be a shining beacon (low wattage of course) and encourage others to think of how they can reduce their energy use and of course costs, at home.”
