THE fierce electric storm which lashed Ottery yesterday has been described as a freak event by the Met Office.

THE fierce electric storm which lashed Ottery yesterday has been described as a "freak event" by the Met Office.

A spokesman said around four inches of rain descended upon the town between 1am and 3am, with the weather system which caused chaos in and around the town having a radius of "not much more than two miles".

Fifteen miles away in Exeter, there was only about 6mm of rain in the same period. The spokesman added: "We knew there would be thunderstorms and heavy showers in the area,but nothing would have prepared us for what actually happened in Ottery. Not very far away there was no rain at all,"The emergency services received more than 150 calls reporting flood problems as the town woke to the damage.
