The group of 14 have planned many fundraisers ahead of their trip in October.

Pupils at The King’s School are preparing for a ‘life-changing’ trip to teach young people in India.

A group of 14 pupils from year 12 will live and work in an orphanage in Kerala for 10 days in October.

Sixth formers Betty Sanena, Angharad Price-Hughes, Harry Light, Reuben Raffell, Kyle Hartnell, Meg Bayliss, Calum Park, Hannah Upchurch, Laurence Wayne, Tilly Rogers, Daisy Randall, Maddi Cadman, Freya Barker, and Issy Bunker were selected after 49 students applied to go on the project.

Students have been fundraising for the Gooodwill Children’s Home since Christmas, with a series of events including car washes, quizzes, and bingo – and on Sunday, July 16, a charity car boot sale.

The money they raise will go towards looking after more than 100 students.

During their stay, they will be teaching PE, science and dance to youngsters aged five to 11.

Leader of the project Dave Nicholson said: “It is a real life-changing experience for all of the students; it will change their outlooks on life and they will view their lives very differently.

“It’s taken up a lot of time and they have to study for mocks and exams.

“It’s a big commitment for the families. The parents have made sacrifices to send them to India as they know how life-changing it is going to be; they realise what a great experience it is.”

Tilly Rogers, 17, said: “It’s been so good, everyone has really put in lots of effort, as well to fundraise.”

During the trip, the students also plan to improve some of the orphanage facilities for the girls, who are considered ‘second class citizens’.

Daisy Randall, 16, said: “We have to respect their culture; while we are there in the orphanage we will use the money we have raised to improve the shower facilities for the girls. We cannot change a cultural system.”

Anyone interested in selling at the car boot sale on Sunday, July 16, can contact the school on 01404 812982. Buyers will be able to set up from 11am and the event will run until 4pm.
