AN OAK and sycamore tree in Ottery caused a stir at East Devon District Council's development control meeting on Tuesday.
The committee was discussing the demolition of a dwelling and the erection of two detatched bungalows with garages and the formation of a new access at Catbells, West Hill Road, West Hill.
A previous planning application had been put forward for the dwelling but was refused on three grounds, of which the concern for the protected trees was one.
Many councillors also objected to the amended application as the new driveway would still be constructed within the root protection area of the protected trees.
The planning officer's recommendation to the councillors was to refuse the application because the driveway would have a detrimental impact on the trees.
A proposal was made for a site inspection to the dwelling with the councillors and the arboricultural officer present before any further decisions are to be made.
Councillors took a vote and the motion for an inspection was carried.
