An Ottery wine merchant has finished second in a competition to find the best independent wine merchants in Britain.
Christopher Piper Wines were runners-up of the New Zealand Independent Wine Retailer Competition 2011, beating over 50 other retailers from across the UK.
Over the summer the focus in the store on Silver Street was on New Zealand wine with in-store displays, tastings, and promotions, and Christopher Piper got down to the final five, only to beaten by Corks Out of Chester for the top prize.
This was the first time that the East Devon vintner had participated, and as well as being invited to an awards lunch at The Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell, London, sales of New Zealand wine went up considerably.
