THOUGHTLESS yobs who wedged glass beer bottles into grass in an Ottery park have been warned the stunt could have seriously hurt someone.

Ottery neighbourhood beat manager Phil Thomas said alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour in the Land of Canaan is beginning to "rear its ugly head" again, and wants residents to help police put a stop to it by reporting any incidents.

Last weekend officers discovered several glass bottles had been "rammed" into the grass area at the site, leaving them fearful that broken shards could be left protruding from the ground.

PC Thomas said: "It's just a stupid thing. If a mower went over them then it would result in someone getting seriously hurt. As a criminal offence it's either reckless or intentional."

Ottery firefighters had to tackle a blaze in the park last Thursday after a bin was set alight there.

Police have urged residents to report revellers bent on "late-night stupidity".

A series of odd, late-night weekend thefts has plagued the town over recent months, although a spate of milk thefts seems to have stopped.

PC Thomas said this month he was "appreciative" of the Herald's coverage of the spree, but "stupid" thefts were still occurring.

It was revealed teen revellers returning from nightclubs were pinching milk from residents' doorsteps as part of a game.

PCSO Maria Clapp wants any suspect late-night behaviour reported as it happens so police can investigate.

She said: "If people see anything odd late at night it is better reported rather than not."

Residents can report incidents to police on 08452 777444.
