THERE are six days to go before the name of the 2008 Sidmouth Citizen of the Year is announced.Ray Davies, president of the Rotary Club of Sidmouth, will present the honour on Wednesday, April 30, at a Rotary lunch at the Riviera Hotel.A committee of three has been checking through 119 votes cast for 21 people, giving no clues as to who might receive the accolade. Even other Rotarians are being kept in the dark.Normally Arthur Passey, co-ordinator of the Citizen of the Year contest, would give an address but, as he is currently in hospital, a substitute will be found.Herald acting editor Pete Le Riche will also speak at the lunch.Since 1985, Rotary has worked with the Herald to give recognition to Sidmothians who go above and beyond what is expected of them to make a real difference in the town.Last year the honour went to Bill Lankester, whose tireless work for various community projects and as founder of Sidmouth's Living with Cancer group, earned him the coveted title. He said: "At the time, I was just gobsmacked really. This guy came to the door and asked me if I'd be Citizen of the Year. I had to wait two months before I could even tell my family."Town Council chairman Councillor Tom Cox will attend the presentation. Results in next week's Herald.
