AN EXTENSION to the scout hut in Ottery St Mary has received the support of the Town Council, but on the condition that the organisers address parking issues.

Up to 40 extra cars currently arrive on the narrow roads around Winters Lane when the hall is in use, and several residents are concerned that the extension will just make the situation worse.

Councillor Paul Lewis, who lives on Winters Lane, said the amount of cars parked on the road was a problem and trying to get through the area could be difficult.

He added: “I’m worried about children running out on to the road with all these cars around.”

Some of the residents on Winters Lane had reported being blocked in their own drives by parents dropping their children off, but John Green, scout group leader, said they were doing their best to alleviate the problem.

He added: “Ours is a similar issue to the one faced by the primary school – a large number of vehicles arriving in a relatively small amount of time.

“If the kids live in West Hill, Feniton or other outlying areas they have no other option than to arrive by car.”

“We are trying to encourage more youngsters to cycle but unfortunately there’s no safe way to do it if they don’t live in Ottery.”

The Scout group have so far raised over £100,000 for the extension, which would include a larger meeting room, extra storage space and disabled toilet facilities.

Mr Green said that the work was needed to future proof the hall and to help accommodate the 30 youngsters who were on a waiting list.

He added: “We’ve asked parents to be respectful and park as considerately as possible, and we’re working with the police to help educate parents on where they should be leaving their cars.”

The final decision on planning approval will be made by East Devon District Council.
