The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital is hosting an open day on Saturday, July 5, to celebrate 60 years of the NHS and the bicentenary of the West of England Eye Unit. Visitors to the Wonford site will meet frontline staff and enjoy behind the scenes tours

The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital is hosting an open day on Saturday, July 5, to celebrate 60 years of the NHS and the bicentenary of the West of England Eye Unit. Visitors to the Wonford site will meet frontline staff and enjoy behind the scenes tours. There will be also be health information stands, NHS careers advice and jobs and charity stalls. The Mardon neuro-rehabilitation centre, which is near the Wonford hospital site, and Mardon League of Friends are holding a summer fayre and barbecue from 1pm until 8pm.The hospital provides acute hospital services to around 350,000 people and is the major incidents hospital for Sidmouth residents. It offers specialist services such as cancer care, plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopaedic surgery, paediatric care and renal services.Most of the trust's services, including specialist units, such as the West of England Eye Unit, the internationally renowned Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre and the purpose-built Centre for Women's Health, are based at the main hospital. Across the services, the hospital has around 850 inpatient beds and more than 60 day case beds. During 2007/08 the Trust spent around £286 million and employed almost 6,000 people to provide healthcare services for the communities it serves. The open day runs from 11am to 4pm.
