A PERMANENT orienteering course can be created in Sidmouth thanks to a £2,000 grant from Keith Owen Fund.
Grateful members of Devon Orienteering Club received a cheque for the total at a recent training session at Mutters Moor.
The funding will be used for a permanent course at the southern end of the Byes - to be opened in the spring.
Orienteering, which includes map reading, time-keeping, team work, and coping with mental and physical challenges, is a growing activity with all ages in the Sid Valley.
The Reverend Handel Bennett, grants chairman of the Sid Vale Association’s Keith Owen Fund, said: “Sidmouth is fortunate to have the interest of John Dyson, chairman of the Devon Orienteering Club, in promoting orienteering for all ages so successfully in Sidmouth.”
John paid tribute to the support of coach Tessa Stone, who is arranging six training and competition events for the valley.
The club’s next training event will be on Fire Beacon Hill on April 27.
Handel added: “Keith Owen loved the countryside around Sidmouth, and I’m sure he would have been pleased to support this worthwhile activity. Anyone seeking funding for voluntary organisations may apply through www.sidvaleassociation.org.uk.”
