FRAUDSTERS hope to frighten women with ‘pervert’ calls in a bid to obtain cash and card details, one Sidmouth resident warned this week.
The householder, who wants to remain anonymous, was “shocked” when he received a random and abusive call last Sunday. The caller had wanted to speak to the man’s wife.
After hanging up the phone, the resident received a call from a fraudster pretending to work for BT.
“He was reassuring and tried to get me to sign up to their nuisance call list and take my credit card details,” said the resident.

“I refused, rang BT and they told me they’d received 100 calls that day over the same scam. They said these people are targeting women with an initial abusive call to frighten them. Then they ring you up, being all nice, to get details out of you.”
