MORE than 100 people gathered on Peak Hill on Sunday (June 8) to fly kites and eat cake at an event organised by the Catholic church in Sidmouth.

It was the third year such a gathering took place to celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian Church.

Local churches and schools were invited to join the fun.

Candles were lit on a large chocolate cake and Canon Paul Cummins led everyone in singing ‘happy birthday’ to the church.

Families came together to fly their kites.

Event organiser Jill McGauley said: “Each year, more people hear about our ecumenical celebration at Pentecost and come and join in. The event is steadily growing. All denominations are represented here, young and old and plenty in between.

“It is very special for us all to meet in this beautiful place and share such a happy time together.”

As the first few drops of rain fell in the early afternoon, kites were packed away and all that remained were a few hardy families sharing their picnics.
