A PLOT of land in Beer has undergone a major transformation thanks to Beer Horticultural Society.

The triangular site between Pigs Path and Rose Cottages was given a makeover at the weekend by a professional gardener drafted in by the society.

Ursula Makepeace, chairman of BHS, said: "This site had been in need of a thorough tidying-up operation for some time. The society tried to find volunteers to help with such an operation, but only one lady volunteer came forward. So there was no choice but to appoint a professional gardener for the project."

Half of his charges were paid by donations of patrons, the other half was given by a sponsor who wishes to remain anonymous and the new shrubs were paid for by Mr Dudley Taylor.

The plot of land is now registered with Britain in Bloom as a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, following BHS's success last year in their regeneration of the Puffins Playground which also gained a neighbourhood award.

Ursula added: "Every day, Pigs Path is used by a large number of people and the site to the left of the path is now a joy to look at and will be maintained on a regular basis."

Other news to report from the society includes:

* East Devon District Council delivered the 2009 quota of bedding plants on Monday which were immediately planted in Fore Street, near Beer Cross, near Barnards Farm, in New Cut, in front of the Mariners Hall, in front of the War Memorial and in the Anchor Car Park. The plants were chosen by Kathy Boorman.

* Thanks to a generous donation from The Barrel of Beer, the Society was able to replace all plants and the soil in the containers in front of St Michaels Church, and buy flowering red geraniums for various other containers.

* Simon Gooch paid for the three terracotta containers on the flower bed on the right hand side of the entrance to the car park.

* A terracotta container on the Fore Street side of the playground railing was financed out of donations made by the society's patrons.
