The young people at Sidmouth Youth Centre have been having lots of fun lately; dabbling with new and interesting ways to be creative, with cooking and crafting as the star attractions!

We wanted to give our young people the chance to develop their culinary skills, explore new ingredients and cooking equipment, so we gave them the task to make cheese (from scratch!) at our Skills Night session (Tuesdays, 6:15pm-8:15pm, all ages). We then used this cheese to flavour our Senior (Wednesdays, Year 8+) and Junior (Fridays, 6:15pm-8:15pm, Year 6/7) Youth Night sessions, using it to make pizza in a coal-fired outdoor pizza oven.

Our young people were really interested to discover how to make cheese… and so were our Youth Workers! It turned out to be a surprisingly quick and simple process, if rather smelly! The outdoor pizza oven proved a roaring *pun intended* success, with our young people enjoying scattering their homemade bases with oodles of toppings, and of course the special handmade cheese! Eating the pizzas was perhaps the most exciting part of the session, and with that came lots of discussion about mealtimes at home, favourite foods and what countries the young people had visited. We had recently done a quiz with the groups where they had to link different foods to different countries, so this was brought up and recapped.

We have also put on some colourful Valentines Day related arts and crafts activities this month; making card hearts and decorations. Our young people made and painted beautiful hearts, using all colours of the rainbow; it was fantastic to see them giving it a go and getting creative! This got very messy, covering areas of the Centre in lots of paint, and red and pink paper clippings; not so fantastic to clear up…

Seeing how much our young people loved unearthing their artistic talents, we are looking forward to the special events we are hosting with Sidmouth School of Art in March; watch this space and keep an eye on our Facebook page (@sidmouthyouthcentre) to find out more.

It’s very clear that our young people have really enjoyed getting creative with food and arts and crafts; we can’t wait to continue our creative explorations with young people in the Sid Valley in the coming months!

If you know a young person who might like to meet new friends, have fun and learn new skills, please encourage them to join Young Devon’s Sidmouth Youth and come along to our sessions. To sign up, please send us a message on Facebook; we hope to welcome many more young people to our community real soon!
